He has worked on state and local campaigns, including those of Gov. Jim Hunt and Utilities Commissioner Howard Lee in his 1976 campaign for lieutenant governor.
He was a fellow in 1998 at the Institute of Political Leadership, a program that trains students through more than 50 seminars on communication, public policy and campaigns.

He was a member of the Marine Corps in the six years after his graduation.
He then worked in the N.C. Department of Crime Control and Public Safety for the division of emergency management. He developed plans for shelters during the Cold War.
Richardson then worked in Saudi Arabia, where he helped train troops. He returned to North Carolina to join the National Guard.
